How I Turned My DIY Skills into Cosplay Creations: Behind the Scenes of Crafting Custom Costumes

The Birth of a Cosplay Dabbler

It all started with a love of Halloween, I always loved to make my own costumes as a kid and teen, then later couple costumes with my partners, and then themed family costumes. However, as I delved deeper into the world of cosplay, I realized that I had stumbled upon a passion waiting to be honed. Armed with my stock of random upcycled items, the help of my daughter, digital plans purchased from Etsy, and the loads of time I had during COVID, I began my journey into the realm of cosplay creation.

My First Cosplay Creation

The first cosplay item I made was a skull dog mask that my daughter asked me to attempt to make for her. We found a pattern and tutorial from a creator called Mugiwara Cosplay (https://mcreativecorner.com) and we jumped into creating it together! Once I ordered all the supplies we needed-from foam sheets to fur- and printed out the pattern and instructions, the real magic began. And by magic, I mean the LONG and CHALLENGING process of making our very first mask.

The Final Reveal

After weeks of hard work and dedication, the final moment arrived – the mask was complete! As my daughter put on the finished product, we both felt the excitement of having completed such a difficult but rewarding project. The thrill of embodying a character that she helped create-whom she named Neon- was SO empowering and led us to decide we'd make many more cosplay items.
